Week 27 In Our Sights

It is amazing to me when I think about it how far we have come in the last week and half. I was fearful that we might not make it out of week 25 of this pregnancy, and now we are half way to week 27!

I am sure some of you don’t know the stats that I now have on the back of my eyelids.

You see at 25 weeks babies have about a 50% chance of survival and twins have less than that. That is not a nice percentage.

At week 26 a single pregnancy jumps all the way to about 80% chance of survival. This feels so much better than a 50/50 chance of living, but even 80% means that 20% don’t make it. None of this takes into account the high chances of disabilities.

With each day, the chance of survival goes up, and disability goes down. It is a painfully slow ticking of the clock, but I realized tonight we are just about half way done with week 26 and almost over the hump towards week 27!

Week 27 is not in the clear, it has many many dangers. The baby will spend months in the NICU and have many rough days. It is just better odds than week 26, so tonight we celebrate being almost half way done with week 26, something a week ago never looked like it was coming.

Week 27 — You are in our sights!!
Thank you God!

Premature Labor at 25 Weeks

Today has been a rough day. I went to bed last night and woke with a great sense of confidence. Yesterday was a day that seemed to be very successful in stopping the premature labor that my wife was having with our baby girl.

25 Week Ultrasound - Preterm Labor

As many of you know, my wife is pregnant with twin baby girls. One of the girls passed away a couple of weeks ago, and they other baby girl is growing well. Then this week it seemed that labor was coming on, and I rushed my wife and baby to the hospital. It is a good thing we noticed what was happening, because before long she was admitted to labor and delivery and action was begun to try and stop labor. Steroids were given for the baby, and mom was hooked up to the monitors and I.V.

That was Monday, then Tuesday it seemed that we were winning and labor pains were slowing down if not stopping almost all the way. I left the hospital Tuesday evening with a feeling of accomplishment. It felt that we were winning and we had bought some precious time. Full term pregnancies last 37 – 40 weeks, and currently my wife is 25 weeks and 2 days. The baby weighs approximately 1 lb and 10 oz. Clearly, we need more time for the baby to develop.

Today, the doctors were also confident that things were looking positive, and even thought about sending her home with continued meds and bed rest. Late this morning and into the afternoon (currently is it 1:50pm), contractions had come back with full rage, and we were scared once again.

The doctors have increased some of her meds and also given her something to relax. Being the small lady she is, she is conked out from the relaxing medicines. This is good, and it should also somewhat relax her uterus.

It is Wednesday afternoon, and currently we have a personal goal to still be pregnant next Monday, which will signal the start of Week 26. Please pray for this to be successfully met. At that time we will then pray for even more time!

Thank you our dear friends, for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers. In the midst of all of this we have passed the 1 year date of burying our son, John Carter Rinard. His funeral was 1 year ago this past Monday. He is now entertaining all of Heaven with his rambunctiousness! What is the saying? Give em …. Heaven Johnny!

We love you all.
